Several other newspapers reported the move to make the erectile dysfunction drug available for sale at selected Boots pharmacies. Normally, the drug can only be issued with a doctor’s prescription but, following a pilot scheme in Manchester, trained pharmacists will now be able to sell the drug to men depending on their responses to a brief health assessment. Contrary to newspaper reports, viagra will not be available “over the counter” and remains classified as a prescription-only drug. Boots has been given permission to issue the drug in 29 stores, but only to men who clear a suitability assessment performed by a specially trained pharmacist. So far, Boots is the only pharmacy to have been given such permission. The Boots assessment includes a health questionnaire and a 30-minute consultation to check a number of factors, such as medical history, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar. Men will also have to agree to have information passed on to their doctor and may be asked to attend follow-up sessions with their pharmacist. Federal law prohibits buying controlled substances such as narcotic pain relievers (e.g., Oxy Contin®, Vicodin®), sedatives (e.g., Valium®, Xanax®, Ambien®), stimulants (e.g., phentermine, phendimetrazine, Adderall®, Ritalin®) and anabolic steroids (e.g., Winstrol®, Equipoise®) without a valid prescription from your doctor. This means there must be a real doctor-patient relationship, which by most state laws requires a physical examination. Prescriptions written by "cyber doctors" relying on online questionnaires are not legitimate under the law. Buying controlled substances online without a valid prescription may be punishable by imprisonment under Federal law. Often drugs ordered from rogue websites come from foreign countries. It is a felony to import drugs into the United States and ship to a non-DEA registrant. Buying drugs online may not be only illegal, but dangerous.

Men with erectile dysfunction (ED) can now buy Viagra online directly from Pfizer, the drug’s manufacturer. Pfizer has partnered with CVS/pharmacy to launch Viagra.com, which allows patients to purchase the drug online from a trusted source, said the company in a recent news release. By providing a safe and legitimate alternative for buying Viagra, Pfizer hopes to rein in the sale of counterfeit products from fake online pharmacies that prey on unsuspecting patients. In 2011, the company evaluated 22 websites appearing in the top search results for the phrase “buy Viagra” and conducted chemical analysis of the drugs advertised as Viagra. Pfizer found that 80% of the drugs were counterfeit and contained only 30% to 50% of sildenafil citrate, Viagra’s active ingredient. In addition to containing the wrong active ingredient or incorrect amounts of that ingredient, counterfeits are often “manufactured in filthy and deplorable conditions” and may include “potentially dangerous contaminants” said Matthew Bassiur, Vice President of Pfizer Global Security, in a news release. “Samples of counterfeit Viagra tested by our labs have contained pesticides, wallboard, commercial paint, and printer ink,” Bassiur continued. Fake online pharmacies and the products they sell are an escalating public health threat. In the past year, evidence has mounted that a large percentage of the Viagra and other erectile dysfunction (ED) medication sold online is fake. And that the majority of the sites selling Viagra online can't be trusted. It started with data presented at the World Meeting on Sexual Medicine late last year showing that 77 percent of all Viagra (generic name sildenafil) purchased online from 22 different sites was counterfeit. (Note: The study was published only as an abstract for presentation at the conference and therefore has to be considered preliminary. D., conducted the study in cooperation with the global security arm of Pfizer, maker of Viagra.) But  since then, one revelation after another has added to the momentum, suggesting that the majority of sites selling Viagra and other drugs online are untrustworthy and likely trafficking in counterfeit meds, and that fake Viagra is being smuggled into the country in alarming quantities. The Majority of Online Pharmacies Untrustworthy, Officials Say Last month, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), which accredits online pharmacies, announced the results of an analysis showing that 97 percent of the more 10,000 online sites selling prescription medications were operating illegally or not following pharmacy laws and standards. (Note: This is And in June the FDA announced results of a sting titled Operation Pangea IV that busted 1677 online pharmacies for selling counterfeit medications. The agency seized website domain names and posted messages on the sites to alert potential consumers that buying and selling counterfeit drug is illegal and can result in severe penalties.
